The requirements for the DryFire System are separated into two
categories: Hardware and Software.
If you already own a PC, chances are DryFire will operate right
out of the box. However, to give you a more detailed overview of
what is needed, please consult the sections below.
If you already own a system you would like to use with DryFire
and you have concerns whether it meets the minimum requirements,
you may test your system with our test
program. This program will check the speed of your PC and the
graphics system.
Minimum Hardware Requirements
DryFire is not power hungry. If you own an older computer, you
may have everything you need to run DryFire. However, there are
some minimum requirements needed to run the system efficiently:
Pentium II (or compatible - AMD etc.) or better processor running
at 233MHz or faster
32MB (for Windows 95/98), 64MB (for Windows 98SE/ME/2000/NT)
or more memory
A screen/monitor/display with at least 800 x 600 resolution.
1024x768 recommended.
Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP (see software requiremens
below)
20MB free disk space
A spare serial (RS232C) port - these are sometimes labelled
"COM1", "COM2" etc. The simulator comes with
a 9 foot serial cable - 9-pin male to 9-pin female. If your PC
has a 25-pin serial port you will need a 25 to 9-pin adapter.
If all your serial ports are being used, you will need a low-cost
serial port switch to share one of the ports. Adapters and switches
are available from your local computer store.
On newer laptops you may not have a Serial Port. Instead, you
will find several USB (Universal Serial Bus) connections. To use
a USB connection you will need to purchase a USB to Serial Port
Adapter Cable. Caution, not all USB to Serial Port Adapters properly
emulate the Serial Port.
Sound cards and speakers. The DryFire software produces sound
effects (including a gun shot) so you will need an operational
sound system if you want these sound effects.
Modem and Internet account - to access the internet for support
and upgrades
CD ROM drive - to install the DryFire software
PCI or AGP graphics card with OpenGL support and capable of
at least (High Color - 16 bit).
Software Requirements
Since DryFire comes with its own software, the only other software
requirement is that of the operating system. DryFire runs on the
Windows operating systems. However, there are many flavors of this
operating system. Here is a list of what is supported:
